The Idea of North return to The Basement for the first time in two years for an evening of impressive and heart-warming music with the usual pinch of TION hilarity thrown in. You'll be amazed at the sound these four people can make together and you'll forget there are no instruments on stage. Since they last graced our stage they've been around the world, sung with The Manhattan Transfer in Sydney and Canberra, won their second ARIA and released a film clip for the title track from their most recent album 'Smile'. Don't miss this!

So who are The Idea of North?

In short, they're a quartet of musicians, serious about their music without taking themselves too seriously.

Their instrumentation: voice (soprano), voice (alto), voice (tenor) and voice (bass), with a little bit of vocal percussion thrown in. They have a beautifully distinct sound and style, but they cross many musical genres: jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical, comedy - exactly what you see and hear at a concert is difficult to describe.

With ten albums in the catalogue, two ARIAs, a significant local and international fan base, it would seem that despite the difficulty, people are getting better at describing The Idea of North to their friends. You may have heard and enjoyed the CDs (some of them award-winning), but the best stuff actually happens live and can't be recorded onto plastic, no matter how shiny it is.

"The Idea of North is such a rare group of talented, passionate people. They live to sing a cappella and they have been doing it together for twenty years. It is a privilege to call these extraordinary people friends, an inspiration to watch them work and a blessing we can all share to experience a little bit of heaven on earth every time they sing." - James Morrison.

"This a cappella outfit can't put a foot wrong... Critic's rating: 10/10"
- Sun Herald, Sydney

"...measured and absorbing. Like ABBA dipped in velvet."
- Sydney Morning Herald

"...If there is a finer a cappella group in Australia, I'm looking forward to hearing them."
- The West Australian
