Event Details

A showcase of unique Sydney talent. July 24 sees an expansive palette of avant garde, jazz and world music grace The Basement stage. Witness the otherworldly electronic wizardry of the AirSticks coupled with violin (Silent Spring) and vocal (Malarkey). Feast on the visceral, tortured, Zappa-inspired mania of Facemeat and get moving on the dancefloor with Fat Yahoozah.

FAT YAHOOZAH

"World music" is an overused term, and we also feel kind of awkward that collectively we're at least 78% white, so we won't use it. After all, all music is from the world, right? Ever heard alien music? This is not that. We are, however, comfortable with telling you that this music is meant for dancing, so we'd like you do to that. We'd like it.... a lot.

FACEMEAT

Resting tales of the most abject facets of love and lust, middle aged self-imposed trauma and suburban ennui over restless, sickly rhythms, the music of Sydney-based Facemeat engages and then corrupts, whilst the desperate and manic rantings of the band's violent patriarch, disgraced lawyer David Sattout, stomps an audience down to a dank, sullen torpor before launching it skywards towards sociopathic elation. No two shows are alike and Facemeat is as much vile pantomime as it is concert.

MALARKEY

Malarkey is a sample based songwriting duo that explore the relationship between audio samples, movement, lyrics, improvisation and live performance. Comprised of composer, drummer, instrument designer and electronic producer Alon Ilsar and songwriter, vocalist and lyricist Jonathon Miller, Malarkey utilises an innovative new gestural instrument for electronic percussion designed by Ilsar called The Airsticks.

SILENT SPRING

Silent Spring is a duo compromising of Alon Ilsar and Bronwyn Cumbo. In their debut Sydney performance they will perform their piece 'Dawn' which is made up purely of sounds sampled from a violin imitating Australian bird calls. These samples will be played live by Alon on the AirSticks; an innovative new gestural instrument for electronic percussion designed by Ilsar called The Airsticks, along with Bron on the violin.
