Event Details

Deborah Conway has decorated Australian music with a rich body of work over three decades, and her classic “Man Overboard” is as much an anthem here as Pauline Murray’s “Don’t Dictate” is in the United Kingdom. Part of the original mid-1970s punk breakthrough, Pauline kept morphing spectacularly into new musical modes with her once heard, never forgotten vocal style relished and realised by greats such as the father of the Manchester sound, Martin Hannett.

Deborah Conway has won ARIA's, was anointed Rolling Stone Singer of The Year and has been a significant and eloquent contributor in many capacities to Australian music for over 30 years. Her first band Do Re Mi topped the charts with provocative single Man Overboard, Her first solo album String of Pearls achieved platinum sales and she has continued to release albums that consistently attract critical acclaim from reviewers. Conway has pursued a career of extra curricular activities alongside her core business of writing, recording and performing her songs. These have included producing the national concert series called Broad of all female singer/songwriters 2005 - 2008; Artistic Director for the Queensland Music Festival 2009 - 2011; patron of Shir Madness, Australia's only Jewish music festival; chair of the Australia Council Music Strategy Panel.

Last year Conway with longtime collaborator Willy Zygier, released their 9th studio album Stories Of Ghosts to 4 star reviews from Rhythms, Rolling Stone, The SMH, The Canberra Times, Courier Mail & The Australian. The Age described it as 'A career-high release.' Lyrically Stories of Ghosts is an unbeliever's examination of Old Testament themes from a Jewish perspective; musically the album is an evocative mood piece of exceptional clarity.

PAULINE MURRAY (UK)

From north-east England, Pauline Murray is much loved in her home country for powerful, crystal-clear vocals and an impeccable songwriting repertoire stretching back 37 years. Murray's early influences were David Bowie, New York Dolls and Sex Pistols yet Wikipedia also cites synthpop, ambient and electronic among her genres. Murray will be performing in Australia for the first time.
